This is the first, biggest sign you see on the front door of a store at 35th and Woodland, kitty-corner from which are three Habitat houses I worked on a
lot in the spring and summer of 2000.
When the proprietor of this little hardware store saw me taking this photo and accosted me, I finally told him I was with Habitat,
and then he felt OK. It's been my experience that a lot of people living in Habitat neighborhoods, people I would want to live next to, are pleased
that Habitat is there. But he never did ask me why I wanted a
photograph of his sign.
This is also the intersection
where a young child was killed by a speeding motorist a couple years
later. It is astonishing to me how fast some people drive through this
neighborhood, especially since there are so many children and so much on-street
parking. It's not only criminally irresponsible, it's murderously
dangerous. |
Update of
September 2005: Apparently the sign in front of the building
wasn't clear enough, so this one was added on the side. It
says, "Open Monday to through to Saturday. Closed to
Wednesday." As to whether they're open on Sunday, you just
have to guess.
