| Three aerial photographs

This
photograph is centered on 13619 West 75th Terrace (marked by the little pin). The swimming
pool, an especially dark rectangle with an especially white border, is just a tad east. According to Terraserver this house is at -94.74410° West longitude and 38.99251° North latitude. You can learn more about the satellites that take these photographs, and a lot more, by starting here. |
| Udpate of July 4, 2005: An even better aerial photograph is
here.
As good as Terraserver's are, Google's photographs and interface are altogether superior. Go there, try
it, and see. You can move the photo around by simply dragging your mouse, you can center it by simply
double-clicking, and you can zoom in or out by simply clicking + or -. And you can even switch from the
photograph to the street map and back with a single click. This photograph is centered on 94.744924° West longitude and 38.991546° North latitude. In case you were wondering, these coordinates are especially precise: If the latitude had been 38.991547 degrees, that would be north by a distance of less than 5 inches. Update of July 18, 2005: Google has taken another step in presenting maps to Internet users, called Google Earth. To use it you must download a utility and run it from there, but it's worth it. This is not only new, true and useful, it is entertaining. To get started using Google Earth go to earth.google.com and check whether your computer is compatible with this utility. If it is, take a few minutes right now to download it and then fly from outer space to your house or anywhere else. The range of options you have for seeing the world is astonishing. The example image you'll find here shows some street names, the Lenexa-Shawnee border, and the coordinates of the center. From here the sky's the limit. |

| Driving Directions for Out-of-Towners (or you) You can use the interactive map below to show your out-of-town guests arriving by car how to get straight to your door. There's a 99% chance that your guests -- whether they're family or friends or business associates -- will pass through one of the ten outlying cities listed in the map below or one of the four airports listed. Just click on a location and you'll be taken to a Google map showing driving directions from there to Ashley Park. (If you want to know how to get to one of the ten outlying cities or airports from Ashley Park, once you get to the map page you selected below, just click the "Reverse directions" link near the top at the left side.) From the north the directions end at 7501 Pflumm Road, a waypoint address immediately north of the north entrance to Ashley Park. Anyone driving in from the north must get to this location from 75th Street, from which you can "talk 'em in" if you like. And the same goes for guests arriving from the south. From the south the directions end at 7701 Pflumm Road, a waypoint immediately south of the south entrance to Ashley Park, a location your guests must get to from 79th Street. In either case, when you get to the Google map page you selected, replace that ending address with your exact house number and street name in the "End address" box near the top of the page, then click Search. (If Google insists that you live in Shawnee, just let it have its way. Or delete the city and state parts altogether and enter just 66216.) Show me. The resulting page will now show the route from the outlying city all the way to your front door. You may print the page or save it or e-mail it or do whatever else you
like with it. If you want to save it as a URL, click the "Link to this page" link near the top at the right
side, then select and copy the URL that's in your browser's address box. From an airport -- There's a 99% chance that if your guests are landing at an airport to get to you, they're going to start from one of the four listed below. Click (or hover over:) an airport to get directions from there to Ashley Park. Remember: Use the "Reverse directions" link when you get to the page to see directions TO the airport.
From Lawrence -- The link in the map below from Lawrence, Kansas, assumes you're starting from Massachusetts at 23rd Street, in the south, which uses K-10 to get to Ashley Park. From the north end of Mass (at 6th Street near the Kaw River) choose the toll road I-70 or the more scenic K-32. |
