What the heck is Shawnee Mission, Kansas?	It is not a city. It is not a county, it is not a voting district, it is not a neighborhood or a subdivision, it has no elected or appointed officials, and it has no rule-making or taxing authority. It does, however, have specified boundaries. Shawnee is a nearby county in Kansas (where Topeka lives). Shawnee is a city in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. For that matter, so is Mission. And Shawnee Mission is a school district within Johnson County, Kansas. And, just to keep you on your mental toes, Johnson is also a nearby county in Missouri. But Shawnee Mission, Kansas, is not a city. Instead, it is a sort of district that the post office has created in its own mind, and it encompasses some of the cities within Johnson County, Kansas.
