Career

careera.jpg (8885 bytes) The words next to the down-pointing triangle say, "Just another career move."  Here's why.

This appears as part of a full-page announcement in the August 1998 edition of Games magazine.  The announcement is about their "Find-A-Flubb" contest, and the deal is that if you send in "your favorite public goof, in print or photograph" and it is judged the best, you win $1,000.  The scan above is one of five examples of public goofs that appear on the page (and no, there's no photo of Dan Quayle).  The other four examples show obvious oopses, such as a print ad for a chiropractor (which is like a real doctor) that says, "Accidents Can Happen To You!  DON'T WAIT."

So, it is clear from the "Just another career move" blurb that Dick Larson, who composed this contest announcement, thinks the word in the headline should be "careening."  If Mr. Larson had bothered to use a dictionary he would have discovered that "careering" is a word.

According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language:

"Career intr. v. To move or run at full speed; rush."

Also,

"Career n. Speed: 'My hasting days fly on with full career.' (John Milton)."

So, what I say is that if you're going to try to make fun of other people's language oopses, you should make damned sure you know what your talking about first.

OK, I'll admit I had to look up "hasting."
